On his mission for the Mormon church, Bryan went to his bishop, distraught by some natural feelings he was having as a young man. Instead of normalizing this, the bishop asked him a humiliating question and shamed him.

In the last episode of "An ExMo and a NeverMo Walk Into a Bar...", Kate and Erika discussed the harmful messaging from the Mormon church around sex, and the damage that does to women. This episode looks at the harm that this messaging does to men. From being grilled about the verboten masturbation, to being shamed for having any sexual feelings whatsoever, the church does a number on men as well as women. This organization may have lots of discriminatory practices and beliefs, but it doles out harm to all without prejudice or reservation.

The Mormon church teaches nothing but shame around sex. This leads to harmful ideologies and dangerously incorrect information.In this clip, Kate shares what she learned about sex from her parents. Spoiler: It's not remotely factual.

The Two NoMos discuss the harm caused by purity culture, aka the law of chastity, as taught in the Mormon church. They're joined by an amazing local group of women who were also negatively affected by the church's shame on sex. Now out of this harmful organization, they can begin to shed the shame, while celebrating and enjoying this part of life.

Ep. 12 Clip 1 - The Damaging Ick of General Conference

General Conference has been described as, "Receiving a slap and then a kiss." Members are bombarded with messaging that they are not enough, that they will never be enough, and that they need the church to even have a chance at being enough, so they had better come back and stay forever. But they will probably still never be enough. All while they are being told how wonderful and glorious the experience is.Sounds like the tactic of an abuser. Or a cult. Because it is.

Ep. 12 - General Conference "Glow"

For many years, Kate was made to attend "General Conference," a large gathering of Mormons that happens twice a year.
Over this weekend, members are told they are worthless and that they need the Mormon church to make them whole, all while being bombarded with messaging that this is a wonderful, holy, sacred experience. This results in significant cognitive dissonance that is palpable and registers on attendees' faces.
There have also been numerous controversial talks at these conferences over the years. In this episode, Kate and Erika break it all down. Over cocktails. Of course.

In this episode, Kate and Erika welcome Channel Achenbach, a Black woman who converted to the Mormon church in her teens and experienced all kinds of racism, Mormon style. She shares the story of her exit from the church, and the strength she's found along the way, advocating for herself and her children with grace.
